Intro to Landscape Oil Painting with Sandra Cashman, Artist in Residence

October 17 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

Artist in Residence Sandra Cashman will teach a free introduction to landscape oil painting on Tuesday, October 17th at 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of landscape oil painting using a limited color palette, learn some basic techniques to build upon in the future, and come away with a finished 9″ x 12″ painting.

Lessons will cover basic composition, understanding values, color mixing, and painting steps from beginning to end. Canvas, paint, brushes, and other supplies will be provided. We will be using the following colors: Ultramarine blue, Cadmium yellow light, Cadmium red light, Alizarin crimson, and Titanium white. We will be using “Turpenoid” as a solvent (vs turpentine), to avoid fumes.

We will be making a painting of the Manitowish River with the opportunity to learn how to mix a variety of shades of green for trees and grass in sunlight and in shadow, as well as sky, water and reflections.

What to bring:

  • All supplies will be provided, but if you have your own brushes, paints and palette, you are welcome to bring them.
  • A smock or apron to protect your clothes is recommended. Wear short sleeves or sleeves that can easily be rolled up.
  • Bring a water bottle and your own lunch for a break.

This program is for adults age 18 and over. All levels welcome, including beginners. The workshop is limited to 8 participants, and you must register in advance to attend. Call the library at 715-476-2366 for more information.

About the Artist

Sandra Cashman is an oil painter living in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin. Growing up in the Hudson River Valley in New York, Sandy began painting at age 11 with encouragement from her mother and other artistic mentors. She passionately pursued art classes and workshops throughout her formal schooling and beyond.

With a bachelor’s degree in Communications and TV Production, she spent 28 years as a managing partner at a leading Wisconsin advertising agency and production company. Her career took her to top golf courses throughout the country and she was moved to photograph and paint them. She received numerous commissions to paint “Top 100” courses and soon became recognized in golf circles, where her art was featured in several golf publications.

Recently retired, Sandy and her husband and their two basset hounds now live on Little Manitowish Lake where she converted a horse barn into a dedicated art studio. She contributes her business skills to the local art community as treasurer of the Manito Art League and member of the Northwoods Art Tour. An avid hiker, kayaker, gardener, chef and golfer, she feels she has finally come “home” to where she was always meant to be. Her focus today is to continue to be an “endless learner,” to grow and refine her skills as a painter, and to capture and share those magic moments that can only be found in Wisconsin’s beautiful Northwoods.
